Mr Rybolovlev, a Russian businessman, has been ordered by the Court in Switzerland to pay his wife, whom was with him for 24 years, a very precise £2,681,297,538.78! This is an estimated half of Mr Rybolovlev’s fortune which was accrued as a result of the sale of his share of a very successful fertiliser business for $6.5 billion in 2010.

Proceedings have been bitterly contested for six years and Mr Rybolovlev has described the astronomical sum as a “hammer blow”. It is unknown whether Mr Rybolovlev will now appeal.

It is alleged that the billionaire strongly contested the Wife’s claims and tried to conceal the full extent of his assets via offshore ventures.

The assets include his majority ownership of French football club AS Monaco at $295 million, a £12 million Hawaiian mansion, a £178 million penthouse in Monaco, a $88 million apartment on Central Park, New York and the Greek island of Skorpios reportedly worth £100 million.

The previous largest publicised financial settlement was £1.5 billion paid by art heir Alec Wildenstein to his ex-wife and previously Rupert Murdoch who paid £1 billion to his wife in 1999. Reuters have published a list of some of the most expensive divorces in history.
