The first same-sex weddings in England and Wales will be permitted from Saturday 29 March 2014.
The Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act which provides for same-sex marriage was given Royal Assent in July 2013. The provisions will not however take effect until March 2014. This is sooner than first anticipated: initially it was thought that the first same-sex weddings would start to take place from the summer of 2014.
Notice of intention to marry has to be given in advance; couples therefore wishing to marry as soon as they are able will therefore need to give formal notice of their intentions by Thursday 13 March 2013.
The Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act also provides a means for those in a civil partnership to convert their relationship to a marriage if they choose to do so.
We can advise couples on the legal consequences of becoming engaged and of entering into a marriage. We can also advise and assist in relation to the preparation of a pre-marital agreement.
