Back 17 November 2014James Maguire & Co support Wilmslow High School Jennifer Curtis, one of the solicitors at family law firm James Maguire & Co, spent the morning of 13 November 2014 at Wilmslow High School, conducting mock interviews for their Year 11 students. The pupils aged between 15 and 16 each had a 20 minute competency based interview, which focussed on their key skills, strengths and weaknesses. The students were encouraged to prepare CVs and covering letters in preparation for the interview which provided a structure for the interview. All of the students had previously undertaken work experience placements, most of them with local businesses in Wilmslow, and this was a key feature of the discussions. The morning was a great opportunity to meet with local students and to hear their aspirations for their future careers and to provide guidance on how to achieve their goals. Giving feedback was a key part of the process, ensuring that the students had some useful pointers to refer back to in the future as they progress. Several of the students emphasised their ability to work well as part of a team and they had clear ideas on what makes a good leader. Discussions inevitably turned to The Apprentice and the students were able to reflect on how their experience of teamwork differs as they are most used to working with people they know towards a common goal, rather than in competition. One student in particular gave great insight into the comparative target markets for the most recent challenge and how that made the challenge more difficult for one team. With its status as a specialist sports college, the students were all keen to emphasise their sporting achievements. Many students were working towards their Duke of Edinburgh award, and were very enthusiastic about the challenges and learning opportunities that this offered them. They were certainly more willing to spend time outdoors getting wet and muddy than their interviewer! This is the third occasion on which James Maguire & Co have been invited to support Wilmslow High School. It is an important opportunity to give something back to the local community and to support local children.
