Back 24 March 2014Happy Mother’s Day (for Sunday!) Mothering Sunday is fast approaching and hopefully you will all be organised for 30 March 2014. If you are not, hopefully this will serve as a reminder! It is easy to forget how special days such as Mothering Sunday came about. During the sixteenth century, people returned to their mother church, their main church or cathedral of the area for a service on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of the season of Lent. This was referring to as going to “a-mothering” although whether this term preceded the observance of Mothering Sunday is unclear. Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off so that they could visit their mother church and their families. Children and young people who were household servants were also given a day off so that they could do the same and it is believed that they would pick wild flowers along the way to place in church or give to their mothers. Eventually, the religious tradition evolved into the Mothering Sunday secular tradition of giving gifts to Mothers and the giving of flowers in baskets. The religious element of Mothering Sunday may have elapsed for some but it remains a day when Mothers should be celebrated, spoilt and pampered for everything that they do for us.
