No pre-nup for Cheryl

family law solicitor

Following on from the recent news that Cheryl Cole has married her French boyfriend, Jean-Bernard Fernandez after a three month relationship, it has been reported that Cheryl refused to sign a pre-nuptial agreement to protect her estimated £16 million fortune. Cheryl’s new husband is believed to be from a wealthy family himself but Cheryl is thought to be in the better financial position.

Cheryl had previously refused to sign a pre-nuptial agreement when she married footballer Ashley Cole in 2006 saying at the time that she found the concept “disgusting”. Whilst I understand that a pre-nuptial agreement isn’t romantic and I understand Cheryl’s comments at the time of her wedding to Ashley Cole that they were going to be building their married lives together and not thinking about it ending, Cheryl has now left herself open financially as we reported in our blog on 14 July 2014.

Whilst not wanting to think of the marriage ending before it has even begun, when there is disparity in wealth and anticipated future wealth, it is a practical and serious consideration that should be thought about to protect yourself from the financial and emotional cost of financial proceedings. I hope that Cheryl will find happiness with Jean-Bernard and that she will not regret this decision but I would always encourage people to consider their financial position prior to marriage.
