Stress Awareness Day: Navigating the path to Post Traumatic Growth

The beginning of November is here and with it we see stress awareness come to the forefront with International Stress Awareness week and Stress Awareness Day.

Running from the 4th to the 8th of November, International Stress Awareness Week was first established by the International Stress Management Association with the aim to promote stress prevention and improve wellbeing.

Meanwhile UK charity Mind are encouraging awareness each year through Stress Awareness Day on the first Wednesday of November.

At Maguire Family Law we are all too aware of the impact that stress can have on those facing divorce and the impact on their health, their relationships and their families. Our commitment is to help make the process less stressful and help get clients to day one of their new life.

The good news is that we see time and time again the positive results of removing this stress and successfully navigating a divorce can have.

We have in fact found that the positive impacts of achieving a divorce can be described in a phenomenon called Post Traumatic Growth.

We surveyed over 1,000 divorcees and investigated areas including health, quality of other relationships, careers and general outlook on life as we believe that it is important to understand the Post Traumatic Growth effect and how this can manifest in people who have experienced divorce.

“We found that over half of respondents (55 per cent) experienced post traumatic growth – a positive psychological change experienced as a result of going through a period of adversity to rise to a higher level of functioning.”

The results are varied and positive and when it comes to stress and the prospect of life after divorce, we feel that it is important to help share the insights and learnings we have found about Post Traumatic Growth this week as we support Stress Awareness.

The positive message we find from Post Traumatic Growth is that however negative and stressful a situation is, there are so many positive experiences, developments and outcomes that can result as you go through it and come out of the other side.

With that in mind, it is important to raise awareness of the impacts of stress and support available for anyone experiencing it.
