£8.1million provided to Vital Domestic Abuse Charities

The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government has announced that £8.1million worth of funding will be provided to a number of domestic abuse charities to ensure that victims can obtain safe accommodation services (including 1,500 bed spaces) as well as access to the tools required to re-build their lives away from violence.

Throughout the pandemic, domestic violence has sadly been on the increase. In our blog on 14 April we  reported that during the covid-19 lockdown, incidents of domestic violence were up by 25%, which is an alarming statistic.

Victims of domestic abuse have a number of charities from which they can access support and seek the protection that they need. The charities which have received additional funding, include Refuge and Latin America Women’s Aid, amongst others:

Nicole Jacobs, Designate Domestic Abuse Commissioner stated:

“This is excellent news for all those safe accommodation charities who are working so hard to keep to vital services open and running and provide support to survivors of domestic abuse and their children during the pandemic”

There are a number of different charities and services for both male and female victims of Domestic Abuse such as:

  • National Domestic Violence Helpline – 0808 2000 247;
  • The Men’s Advice Line, for male domestic abuse survivors – 0808 801 0327;
  • Galop National LGBT+ Domestic Abuse Helpline – 0800 999 5428.

There are also legal remedies and court injunctions that victims of domestic violence can obtain to protect themselves and/or their children.

If however, you or a child are at immediate risk of harm then always call 999 in the first instance.
